Dangerous Drugs Accutane

Accutane, chemically known as Isotretinoin, is an acne medication which has been directly linked to bowel disease, depression, and even suicide. This dangerous drug received Federal Drug Administration (FDA) approval in 1982 and was manufactured by Roche Pharmaceuticals. Despite Accutane receiving FDA approval, there were many side effects that the users of this acne medication began to experience. Some of the more serious side-effects and risks that Accutane users experienced, included:

  • birth defects (teratogenicity);
  • bowel diseases;
  • colon cancer;
  • crohn's disease;
  • depression;
  • gastrointestinal disorder;
  • iletis;
  • inflamatory bowel disease (IBD);
  • liver damage;
  • lupus;
  • pancreatitis;
  • proctitis;
  • psychiatric disorders;
  • suicide / suicidal tendencies / suicidal thoughts;
  • ulcerative coltis; and
  • violent tendencies.

It wasn't until 2009 that Roche Pharmaceuticals pulled Accutane off the market - 27 years after it was first discovered that Accutane was a defective drug which shouldn't have received FDA approval and should never have been given to people to combat their acne. While there were also generic drugs offered to combat acne, they may be referred to as Accutane, Amnesteem, Claravis and Sotret. Within the first twelve months of Accutane being on pharmacy shelves, a large number of women who were using the product reported that their newborn babies were born with birth defects as well as deformities.

Accutane (Isotretinoin) was prescribed to more than 13 million people who took pills twice daily ranging from 0.5 to 1.0mg/kg with an estimated annual sales amount of $1.2 billion. This acne medication was derived from a synthetic form of Vitamin A and was classified as a retinoid. Originally, Accutane was first developed to combat brain cancer and pancreatic cancer, but it was also noticed that it handled all types of acne conditions from minor mild acne to severe acne. Accutane was also found to help those who had recalcitrant nodular acne.
