Defective Product Tire Failure

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), there are more than 8,000 traffic accidents a year involving death or serious bodily injury resulting from tire failures. Though many of these accidents are attributable to the vehicle owner's failure to properly inflate his or her tires, or other misuses of tires, many tire failures and the resulting injuries are caused by manufacturing defects, design defects, or the tire manufacturer's failure to warn tire users of the dangers inherent in many tires. At the Allen & Abaray, P.A., we put our many years of injury law experience to work on behalf of individuals injured by tire failures.

The most notorious form of tire-related injury is tire tread separation. This was the defect involved in the Bridgestone/Firestone tires mounted on the Ford Explorer, which was linked to the deaths of 271 people and thousands of accidents, and which resulted in a massive recall and replacement of more than 25 million of the affected tires in 2000-2001.

When a tread belt separation occurs it often leads to a tire blowout. Even when the tread separation does not result in a blow out, it can cause the driver to lose control of the vehicle resulting in the same types of serious injuries that occur in an automobile accident. Indeed, as tire tread separations generally occur at relatively high rates of speed, they frequently result in fatal injuries.
